John first started getting popular in 56, when I Walk The Line came out. Through much of the 50's and early 60's, he was pretty popular, and then when Ring of Fire came out, he rose hugely on the music scene. By the mid 60's, he started to burn out on the field, but by 1968, his popularity went through the roof, got tons of great concert gigs, TV shows, and his own TV show, and a documentary on his tour. Through most of the 70's, he was pretty huge, but by the late 70's, he was starting to go down as a living legend. Most of the 80's, he wasn't close to as popular, he started having lesser crowds in the US, but he was still one of the biggest stars in Europe. By the late 80's, he was doing a lot of returns, and by 1993, he was working in the same venue in Branson for 2 whole months. Finally, American Recordings came up, and his popularity went through the roof again.

Cash got famous in 1956 when 'I Walk The Line' was released. The preceding releases of 'Cry, Cry, Cry' in 1955 (charted 14) and 'So Doggone Lonesome' in 1956 (charted 4) set the scene.

The flipside of 'So Doggone Lonesome' was a little ditty called 'Folsom Prison Blues' which could explain why the A side, which seems to have sunk without a trace, charted so highly.
