He created great publicity for himself by arranging for the publication of two very bizarre rumors in the media, namely that he slept in an oxygen chamber so he could live to 150, and that he had attempted to buy the bones of John Merrick, also known as the Elephant Man. These two fabrications generated a great deal of press, and, the media, realizing the potential profits that could be made from such stories, continued to make up their own stories. The end result was that what began as two seemingly harmless publicity stunts on Michael's part, ultimately caused significant damage to his public image and recording career.
