On Thursday, August 3, 2006 the FDA announced it was going to make Plan B available over the counter to anyone age 18 or older. It gained a ton of publicity a bit after that due to people who incorrectly thought Plan B was an abortion pill.
Plan B is a mega-dose Birth Control pill a woman takes after sex in case they had an accident like her partner's condom broke. Birth control pills contain two hormones - estrogen and progestin. These are called combination pills. Some are progestin-only pills. Most women on the pill take combination pills.
The hormones in the pill work by keeping a woman's ovaries from releasing eggs - ovulation. Pregnancy cannot happen if there is no egg to join with sperm. The hormones in the pill also prevent pregnancy by thickening a woman's cervical mucus. The mucus blocks sperm and keeps it from joining with an egg. A birth control pill cannot not cause a child to be aborted since the woman's egg was never fertilized.
