First off, it's Green Day.
And to answer your question they formed in 1987 under the band name 'Sweet Children'. Billie Joe and Mike started it and Al Sobrante (real name John Kiffmeyer) joined as a drummer. After leaving the band they replaced Al with Tre and changed their band name to Green Day.
