They technically broke up in 1998. After Carl Wilson passed away, Mike Love fired Al Jardine. Brian Wilson had left the group in the late 80s, but still occasionally made guest appearances with the group throughout the 90s. In 1998, Mike Love got permission from the other surviving ex-Beach Boys to tour under The Beach Boys' name. The current "Beach Boys" includes Love and longtime keyboardist Bruce Johnston, and several sidemen. Al Jardine and Brian Wilson each tour with their own bands.
