The word "an" is used before vowels. Think about these sentences in your head and see if it sounds right.

Example 1: He already knows an answer to that question.

This is the sentence where it should be used since it flows with the vowel.

Example 2: He already knows to get an birthday card for his brother.

If you sound out "an birthday" in your head it doesn't flow well because it starts with a consonant.

There are exceptions to this rule such as the word "hour" because the h is silent, so basically it just sounds like "our".

Example: An hour from now.
