Her mother, who became pregnant at the age of 13, was thrown out of her parent's Baltimore home and moved to Philadelphia, where Eleanora Fagan Gough was born. Due to her autobiography "Lady Sings the Blues" which incorporates a bit of creative license and rumors surrounding her early childhood it is widely believe that she was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She was not. I have been researching this question myself and while some internet sources claim the aforementioned birth place, all literature and text I have checked out from the library state that it was Philadelphia where Lady began her life. I personally trusts the books over the internet, and in my personal experience, Philadelphia seems a more suitable place of origin for a woman with such strong and passionate ties to Jazz.
