You will never get a precise answer on this one. Drums were once used as a form of communication (signals.) African drums (in some parts of Africa today) are a spoken language and used for talking over great distance. In Sri Lanka history drums were also used for communication and have a history stretching back 2500 years ago. Japanese troops used then to keep a marching pace and to motivate their troops. The snare drum, which is a large drum was carried over the soldiers right soldier and suspended by a trap and that's when the English word "drum" came into play. The oldest known drums date back to 3000 bc.

A better answer is about one hundred years old. Of course drums are ageless having existed from prehistory but the "Drum Set" didn't really exist until the first practical spring loaded bass drum pedal was invented in 1909 by William F. Ludwig Sr. You may be aware of Ludwig drums. The founder of Ludwig was W.F. Ludwig Sr. and he held the patent to the first practical bass drum pedal. There were various bass drum pedals developed before this but they proved to be far from practical. The creation of the first bass pedal with a spring to recreate the rebound of a stick off the head of a drum, in my opinion, heralds the true birth of the"Drum Set."
