There is no definite answer to this question, as hip-hop was a cumulation of multiple influences. However the most accepted story of origin is that DJ Kool Herc brought the Jamaican style of toasting to South Bronx, NY. Toasting was the popular way to hype reggae crowds in Jamaica, where the DJ would also use a microphone to freestyle lyrics, ad-lib and emphasise points of the song he was playing. After bringing this to The Bronx, the sound spread rapidly across the whole of New York and toasting was used over a variety of musical styles popular in black America, such as disco, rock, soul, funk and even some experimental electronic music, e.g. Kraftwerk. Toasting became known as rapping and established itself further. Existing music was remixed by DJs and new instrumentals were composed from scratch - all specifically for lyricists. This idea, in unison with the rise of graffiti art, street dance, beat poetry, crew/gang identity, urban fashion and protest against what was seen as the racist agenda of the government, eventually fused together as hip-hop culture.
