The African-American slaves are responsible for these styles of music. Jazz and Blues Music was brought to America by the African-American slaves. By the year 1808, there were almost 500 000 slaves in the U.S. Most of these slaves came from West Africa and brought their culture, including their music, with them. There would be festivals in New Orleans, New England and New York. So, one could say that jazz and blues music originated in West Africa, or from African-American slaves from across the United States.

The Mississippi Delta is a fairly small region comprising 11 of Mississippi's 82 counties, the northernmost of which is DeSoto County and the southernmost being Warren County. Robert Johnson, from Hazlehurst, MS, in Copiah County, is widely hailed as the "king of the blues" and is from the MS Delta region. It is said that Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his talents at the crossroads of Old HWYs 61 and 49 in Clarksdale, MS, Coahoma County. Pinpointing what region of the Delta the blues was born in would be difficult, as the entire region has been rich with musical and artistic culture since slavery was alive in Mississippi.

Delta Blues music originated in the Mississippi Delta. Because of the Delta's history of poverty, it was uniquely appropriate for the formation of this particular subset of country blues music. It was also an unusual genre because it emphasized the music of the African American community in the early 1920s, when Jim Crow laws were still in great effect.
