Country Western music began around the 17th century as North American immigrants brought along their different musical instruments and traditions. The first popular western song was called "Blue Juanita" and was published in 1844. In the 1870's to 1890's the cowboy as we know him was born into reality with cattle drives and livestock herders. They sang songs that were from their native cultures and homelands but they changed them around to fit their current homelands and situations. The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee began broadcasting western music in 1925 and this caused the popularity if the genre to rise. Over time "Country Western" became a popular genre and soon "western" was dropped and it became known as "Country" music and Nashville became known for country.
