they lived on a reservation. they live in Montana. they must obey American laws. they also have their own laws. they were ruled by council of cheifs

Back in the day the Crow were in two broken into two main bands.

Both of the bands had early run ins with American trappers that lead them to take a course of avoiding war with white settlers.

Jim Beckworth, a half black mountain man took up residence with the Crow in the 1830s and strongly influenced them into trapping and trading with the mountain men, rather than raiding trappers to get their goods.

Later, a 12 year old who would be named Plenty Coups had a dream quest vision in which he saw a chickadee whether a storm that killed everything else in the forest.

The tribal elders took this dream very seriously and interpreted it to mean that the only safe path for the Crow was to befriend the whites.Plenty Coups went on to be a significant chief and helped turn the Crow into military allies and scouts for the US Army.In this capacity they often fought bravely side by side with US soldiers against the Sioux and Cheyenne with whom they had been warring for generations.

Also the Story made famous by the movie Jeremiah Johnson is based upon the true experience of a man called Liver eating Johnson who had a personal war against the Crow for nearly a decade.
