Basically, John Cooper's (lead singer) pastor had asked him if he wanted to do an outreach with a couple other musicians (i.e., starting a Christian band together). John, being the spontaneous type he was back in ole '96, said yes. All of the musicians part of the founding were coming from all different bands, so John came up with the idea of throwing all types of things in a Skillet and frying it up...and someone, at some point, said to John, "Hey, that could be the band's name!" And John's like, "Okay, sure, whatever." And thus became the band and the name itself...it started as a side project in Memphis Tennessee.
In 1996 when the band started.

Well, Skillet said Skillet is a Christian band. And Skillet's lyrics (if you read the history of the song) also prove it.
John Cooper started the band with Ken Steorts. They began the band because both of their former bands broke up. They started Skillet as a side project, with inspiration from their pastor.
