The Everly Brothers grew up in a musical family, so they worked in many places even when they were youngsters. One of the first places they worked (or sang) was in Shenandoah, Iowa, on their parents' radio program; when their folks moved, so did Don and Phil, performing in Knoxville, Tennessee, and then in Nashville. After high school, they embarked on their own career as a duo. They were signed by a New York-based record label, and they began to have top-40 hit songs beginning in 1957. At that point, they began to perform in a number of cities, especially throughout the mid-west and the south. They also appeared in New York on the Ed Sullivan Show, and as their fame (and the number of hit records) grew, they began to perform world-wide: in Adelaide, Australia; London, England (where they sang on a BBC program); and Paris, France. They continued to tour throughout much of the 1960s; even when they no longer had big hits, they were still in demand. The last concert they did together before their break-up in July 1973, was in the Los Angeles area. They finally reconciled a decade later and did an album in London in 1983. They also did a tour with Simon & Garfunkel in 2003 (they performed in Boston, Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, and other cities); and the Everly Brothers did one final brief concert tour in England in 2005.
