The marimba is a mallet percussion instrument looks similar to the xylophone, though it is completely in terms of sound, function and technique. The main difference is the shape in which the bar (or key) is cut. Both of them have a smooth top, creating a flat playing surface but the difference comes in the was the bottom is cut. The bottom of the bars on a xylophone is cut with an elongated "m" shape which gives it a piercing staccato sound making it ideal for loud melodic lines, especially in a solo context. The marimba, on the other hand, is cut with more of an "n" shape which gives is a rounder, mellow tone which makes is ideal for rolling chords and playing countermelodies.

The marimba has been used for many, many years in many different cultures as a folk instrumennt so it is difficult to pin down an inventor. The marimba has been used in the traditional music of such cultures as El Salvador, Guatamala and Costa Rica. It is believed to have originated in west Africa blieve it dont think it is true though sorry got the info from a diff. sight i will try and get back on wit the real info.
