There should be two hose's coming off the engine going to the firewall. Black in color and about 1 inch across.
The heater core is usually your last resort. So now start from the end to the beginning, core, thermostat, flush, hose, fluids. Follow the trail and your bound to find your answer.

Check your heater core. You may have the heater core leaking and if it continues it will not be long before it will begin to leak inside of the vehicle itself.
I have a 2001 OLds Aurora 4.0 and was quoted $5800.00 to change both head gaskets. Ouch! So I added sealer into rad hose and changed the thermostat seems o.k for now.

Disconnect the send and return lines from the heater core and use a hose coupling and hose clamps to connect these two lines together
It connects to a heater hose behind the engine.
They (2) should be up by the firewall on the passenger side

You know the heater hose on a vehicle needs replacing when it beings to swell and soften. The heater hose runs from the intake manifold to the heater core.
The 1997 VW heater hose has swivel nuts on each end of the hose. Turn the swivel nuts to the left to remove the heater hose.

it might be a hose but most likely its the heater core
one large hose from bottom of radiator to side of water pump. other large hose from thermostat housing to top of radiator. one heater hose from water pump to heater core, I think this one has a Y in it if there is a rear heater other heater hose from heater core to somewhere on top the engine. If there is a rear heater, its return hose goes to a fitting on the radiator.
