The following is for the AW4 four-speed overdrive automatic:
First, be sure to set the hand brake and chock the wheels, as you'll be underneath your XJ with it in neutral!
There's a nut and a bolt holding the neutral safety switch to the passenger side of the transmission. Loosen those fasteners and then using the thin line which you will find cast into the body of the NSS (you may have to spray the NSS with some cleaner to see it), line up that line with the flat sides of the shaft coming out of the side of the transmission.

loosen the retaining screws and rotate it slightly forward or back, when you have it in the right spot tighten it again
