THE original Bass Guitar was developed bu Paul Tutmarc in the 1930s as a replacement for the double bass, but he received little success for the invention. In the 1950's Leo Fender (who, obviously, is the man who strated Fender. Doesn;t have anything to do with it any more but that's another story) took the idea and produced the first mass produced bass guitar on the market; the precision bass. This was hugely popular and since bass Guitars have become the norm in all bands, and variations upon the precision and still made and extremely popular.

The bass guitar was made because it was a simpler version of the double bass.

The bass used in music before the bass guitar was invented was the double bass. (note that it is still preferred over the electric bass by some musicians) Standing over six feet tall and three feet wide, the double bass is bulky and heavy, making it difficult to carry around for rehearsals and performances. Also, given that it's a string instrument, it isn't very loud and is easily overpowered in many groups, such as a big band setting, where you might have 15-20 other players. Amplification is possible, but given its acoustic nature, it is difficult to amplify and is easy to get feedback. Also given the size of the fingerboard, playing with good intonation is difficult for even the best players.

The bass guitar is slender, light, and much easier to transport. It is much easier to amplify, making projecting through a large ensemble a breeze. With the addition of frets, playing in tune is no longer a problem. Also, an electric bass is generally 1/10th the price of a double bass of equal quality.

The first bass guitar was invented by Paul Tutmarc in Seattle, Washington, USA in the early 1930's. It was known as the "Electric Bass Fiddle," and appeared in a catalog by Tutmarc's company, Audiovox, in 1935. Much smaller than the double bass, this bass was easier to carry. This bass was not fretted, however, and was not quite as popular as its descendant.

This design was innovated greatly by Leo Fender, founder of what is now known as Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. Using a telecaster-body design, Fender came out with the "Precision Bass," a.k.a. "P-Bass" in 1951. It was fretted like a guitar, which allowed players greater ease in playing in tune (hence the name: "Precision Bass"). Not only was this model easier to carry than a double bass, but it was also much easier to play in tune. This model was extremely popular and was the first bass guitar as we know it today.
