Three of The Beatles were deported from Germany late in 1960: George Harrison (for playing in nightclubs underage, at 17), and Paul McCartney and Pete Best, after they were charged with attempted arson. (When they moved out of their sleeping quarters behind the Bambi Kino, a movie theater, they set fire to a condom and wrote "THE BEATLES" in the soot. The charges were dropped, but they were sent home.) With the band pulled apart, John Lennon and then-member Stuart Sutcliffe returned to Liverpool on their own.
