These are both great composers but there are way more! They both did great things but many other composers have just as much impact as they did. Just a few that come to mind are the following.

1. Ravel - Probably the best orcehstrator of all time.

2. Bartok - well this is obvious

3. John Corigliano - Ghost of Versailles - that's all you need to hear ^_^

4. Walter Piston - Orchestration and Melodic material

5. Hindemith - Uhhh Sonata's for everyone ^_^

6. Penderecki - Orchestra and Choir, as well as timbre

7. John Adams - Rhythm and suspense.

8. Higdon - Concerto writing is brilliant

9. Zwilich - Concerto writing is brilliant as well

10. George Crumb - Timbre and color

12. Shostakovitch - 15 Symphonies and 15 Quartets of sheer brutality.

13. Ligeti - Film Score and the 3 string quartets.

14. Lutoslawski - Concerto for orchestra and an awesome string quartet

15. Kancheli - a must listen. Symphony no. 5 and Styx

16. Gubaidulina - Viola concerto and she has a great Accordion solo. Chamber Music

17. Webern - String Quartets

18. Bloch - Suite 1919 for solo Viola, and his symphony in C# ( could be wrong on key)

19. Scriabin - Russian composer that is forgotten often. toned poems

20. Rouse - Large orchestral works, heavy emotion.

21. Vivier - Lonely Child, Ring modulation.

22. Schnittke - Viola Concerto, Concerto Grosso, and other chamber works (trio sonatas)

23. Messiaen - Formal structure in his music is mind blowing

24. Berg - Violin Concerto

25. Ives - Symphonies

26. Prokofiev - Piano Concertos and Symphonies, really good string quartet

27. Walton - Violin and Viola Concertos, also a good String Quartet

28. Elgar - Cello Concerto and Piano Quintet

29. Dutilleux - String Quartet

30. Stockhausen - Stimmung

31. Takemitsu - gestural composer (to my ears) great guitar and flute stuff. He had a great ear for orchestral music. and a bomb Viola concerto A String around autumn.

32. Elliot Carter- Enough said

33. Bernstein - he must be on the list

34. Varese - Arcana

35. Joan Tower - she is doing some great stuff. Viola works are awesome!

A good idea is to go to the library or on YouTube everyday and grab a cd or listen to something that you have never heard of before. and its okay if you don't like it because then you figure out what you do and don't like. One of the most important things as a composer, in my eyes, is that you don't get stuck listening to "the big names." Because not all the greatest composers have been recognized. 36. Barber, or 37. Roy Harris. hope this helps. always be listening.
