The band sports a logo known as the "Deathbat". It was originally designed by an artistic high school friend of Avenged Sevenfold, Micah Montague, as seen on the band's first DVD, All Excess. The Deathbat has appeared on all of the band's album covers, many of which were done by Cameron Rackam, a close friend of the band. The Deathbat has developed from just being a skull with bat wings, to sometimes appear as a full "man size" skeleton with bat wings, as it can be seen at the cover of City of Evil. On Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, there are pictures of two people (in which appear to be Cain and Abel), another angel-like human and a semi-opaque Deathbat below it, several Deathbats appear on the back cover of the album as well. The Deathbat also appears on covers of number of singles such as "Bat Country", "Warmness on the Soul" and "Critical Acclaim".
What does the dear god by avenged sevenfold lyrics mean?
Their name is based on the philosophy of, "what goes around comes around." M. Shadows got it from the biblical story of God's wrath upon Cain for killing his brother Abel. How did avenged sevenfold come up with their logo?
They talk about it in their "All Excess" DVD. A friend of theirs drew it and they automatically loved it. I forget the guys name, but he also does artwork for most of their covers and shirts.

What does a skull with wings mean?
To me it means a few things combined. The crow represents the bird that was forgotten. A sense of failure, like in the old testiment when Noah sent out a raven and it never returned failing its test, while the dove succeeded and has been long remembered. The skull represents death, whether it be a near death experience or a struggle, or a loved one lost. I have that tattooed with roses underneath to represent the hope you can have by overcoming your struggles. I battled through thoughts of suicide and my tattoo of the crow on top of the skull with roses is a reminder that though I've struggled with thoughts of suicide and failed so many times there's always hope for the ones who have had it rough.

This is true, but I have a tattoo of Overkills noted mascot, Chaly, around my wrist - A skull with batwings (Overkill which ironically is another way of saying Avenge Sevenfold) I had the tattoo far before A/S came out, But I'm assuming they are paying some type of homage to Overkill. check wiki for Overkill and you'll find more answers.
