The Concerto was originally written for violinist Ruth Posselt and presented to her during the Summer of 1943, with a piano reduction of the orchestral part by Paul Aron. She passed on the Concerto when Vladimir Dukelsky (Vernon Duke) presented her with his new Concerto which she eventually premiered. (Posselt's sister Gladys was married to Martinu's close friend the Czech-American violinist and pedagogue Emmanuel Ondricek at whose Summer home he spent time during the Summer of 1942 composing the work.)
Mischa Elman later in the Fall of 1943 contacted Martinu with a request for a Concerto and the composer produced the already written 2nd Concerto which her premiered with the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Serge Koussevitzky on 12/31/43. Martinu did write some special additional cadenzas for Elman.
