Rock around the Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets is the best known But at this time, there were songs around before that have used the term Rock and Roll. It is well known that Elvis went to see Bill Haley perform. Anyway yeah it is kinda hard to answer but I do believe that Rock around the Clock is the widely accepted first Rock and Roll hit. Most Rockabilly like Elvis and Carl Perkins was regional at first.

No easy answer to that question: The rock/pop chart began in 1955. The first record to reach number one in 1955 was "Let me go Lover" by Joan Weber (pretty song, typical of the early 50's, but hardly a rock song). That was approximately six months before "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and his Comets reached number one. That song was the first real rock song to reach the top spot.
