Interesting question :) Very difficult to answer, because most of the 50's number one hits were by artists, not bands. Also not much good information on number one hits in the 50's BEFORE the rock era began in 1955. If you want to consider the Everly Brothers a band, they had 3 number one hits before 1960...Cathy's Clown would be number 4 but that was in 1960. If you find the answer to your question, I would love to know....please post on my message board.
