To this day, that remains an unsolved mystery. He died in a cheap motel in Los Angeles, in mid-December 1964 when he was only 33. He had been shot in the chest. The woman who shot him was the manager of the motel, Bertha Franklin. She claimed that she had shot Cooke in self-defense; she said he had broken into her office residence and attacked her. But Sam Cooke had no history of violence towards women-- he was known as a ladies man, and although he was married, he had a number of girlfriends; but none of his friends or colleagues could ever recall him raising a hand to anyone. Thus, the story Ms. Franklin told raised a lot of questions and many people were skeptical. In the end, Cooke's death was ruled a justifiable homicide (self-defense); but even now, there are people who still believe he was murdered, although the reason or the circumstances may never be known.
