The lap steel guitar's first ideas were developed in Hawaii and devived from the box of the spanish guitar. A guitar company later adapted that idea into a new concept of lap guitar.

start with a thin piece of steel than wind over the string 1000s of times. I learned this when I was putting a very thick bass string on my electric guitar to experiment with low tunings.
