George Martin was The Beatles' record producer. He is sometimes called the "fifth Beatle" because of his contributions to the Beatles' recordings. He chose the songs which they recorded, helped arrange their tunes, hired studio musicians when they were needed and occasionally played piano on some records. He was open-minded to the ideas of the Beatles and helped them translate their ideas into the finished recordings. As they grew as musicians in the studio, he allowed them more power in producing their own records. Many experts believe that another producer would have impeded the Beatles as professional recording artists.
