He got a patent for some things he says will improve the tone. #45 of the patent abstract states, "The body of my improved instrument is made of substantially the same shape as an ordinary guitar..." I goes on to say it has parchment or vellum heads instead of wooden heads among other things.
So, he didn't invent the guitar, he just made some changes that are not seen in modern guitars. How many guitars do you see with parchment heads???
