To begin with, there are many areas in which a guitarist can excel.

They may be excellent technical shredders, high speed players who go for extreme speed and precision.

They may be the most melodic players out there, creating uplifting, angry or sad riffs or solos.

They may be masters of dynamics, tone and harmony, blending their guitar with the rest of their band.

They may even be rhythm players with a fine-tuned right hand.

In my opinion, the best player in the world would be a fantastic mix of all these, which leads me on to say that I can't really say for sure, but I can tell you my favourites.

The fastest picking technical player in the world is Tiago Della Vega, at 320bpm

The fastest technical shredders in the world (Pull-offs and Hammer-ons) is probably Michael Angelo Batio

Many people think he's overrated, but Slash (real name Saul Hudson), of Velvet Revolver and Slash's Snakepit, and formerly of Guns N' Roses, is an excellent melodic and precise player - its not for no reason he is one of the most well known Guitarists of all time.

A few personal favourites of mine are fantastic combined shredders and melody makers, and tend to come in pairs from certain bands.

They include: Mark Tremonti (Creed and Alter Bridge) (List of top 50 fastest players)

Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge, Solo, Mayfield Four, Slash's upcoming tour)

Synster Gates (Avenged Sevenfold) (List of top 50 fastest players)

Zacky Vengence (Avenged Sevenfold) (List of top 250 fastest players)

Matt Tuck (Bullet For My Valentine)

Matthew Padget (Bullet For My Valentine)
