The Song of Roland is not a song, but an epic French Mediaeval poem telling of the Battle of Roncesvalles in 778, during the reign of Charlemagne.
Nobody knows who it's author was- his identity remains lost to history. All that can be said is that it is one of the earliest works of French literature, and was written some time between 1140 and 1170.
