There is no one person who was responsible, but most people would say that Clive Davis, the head of Arista Records, who discovered her and mentored her, was a major force in her career. Her mother certainly contributed as well-- Whitney's mom, Cissy Houston, was a famous gospel singer who also had her own Pop Music group, and Whitney seemed to emulate her mother in going into the music industry professionally. And once Whitney had her first hit songs in 1985, her career took off from there.
