Their songs were covered by countless artists, during the 1960s and ever since. John Lennon and Paul McCartney also gave several songs they didn't think met Beatles "standards" to other artists to record; many of those artists were later signings of Brian Epstein's. The songs were later released as a compilation album, titled The Songs Lennon and McCartney Gave Away.

The Rolling Stones are more likely to have more songs than The Beatles, because the band was together longer. However, if you count all the songs that the Beatles recorded, during their solo careers, the Beatles probably had more songs as they recorded probably nearly the same amount of songs as a band indivually. The Beatles recorded and released 214 different songs on original release albums, EP's and singles, about 20 of which were not written by the Beatles. Some of these songs were recorded more than once, but a little differently and re-released. Two songs were recorded in German in the early days. The Beatles also recorded many songs that were never released. Some of these turned up on post-Beatles solo albums.

Meet the Beatles was a repackage of With the Beatles, their second album. The band had begun to use more studio technique, including doubletracking, than simply recording their songs the same way they performed them onstage. ("We nearly doubletracked ourselves off the second album", Lennon recalled later.) The repackage also included "I Want To Hold Your Hand", which was the first recording they did on four-track; their previous records were made on two-track.
