Jim.
I presume this question is asking about famous or relatively well-known violists, rather than random people out in the middle of nowhere... so here goes...
There's Tabea Zimmerman and Kim Kashkashian (not kidding, that's her real name), for starters. Obviously there are others but these are two of the violists with more name recognition.
There are also a large group of violinists who play viola on the side (and vice versa) but are also well-known for their viola performances. This group includes Pinchas Zukerman, Janine Jansen, and Maxim Vengerov.
A surprisingly large percentage of violinists will also learn to play viola professionally for various reasons, such as for another venue to perform on, more repertoire variety, more performance opportunities, and also due to the rising demand for violists in the music industry.
Composers from older times (most prominently from the Classical era) also played viola and this contributed some degree of influence in their music (like more vibrant tenor parts). Examples of this group include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Frank Bridge.
Well.. there you have it. A breakdown of some of the most well-known violists in the world. Hope that's what you were asking for.

a viola is an instrument, an Olivia is a person.
Twelfth Night
A violist is someone that plays the viola. There isn't really the opposite of that other than someone that doesn't play the viola.
Viola normally plays in the alto clef. However in score-reading, the treble-clef is used as the viola does not play registers as low as the other strings.alto cleff

The viola was created in the 1500s and our modern viola was created in the 19th century. The viola was made before the violin was!
Viola is a stringed instrument that is often found in an orchestra. While looking similar (Identical to most) to the violin, they are indeed different. Viola has the strings C, G, D, and A (lowest to highest) and plays in alto clef, while violin has the strings G, D, A, and E and plays in treble clef. Viola tends to produce a darker tone than violin. Cello has the same strings as a viola, but their strings are an octave lower than the violas'.
In Karate Kid 2010, Meiying plays the violin.
