Jim Morrison had been asked by the producers of the show to change the word "higher" for "better" in the line "Girl, we couldn't get much higher" from the song 'Light my Fire', which they were to perform that night. Morrison and the rest of the band agreed, but once the producers left, Morrison told the band that he wasn't going to change the words. When it was time for them to perform, Morrison sang the words as they were. Immediately after, the producers and Ed ran back stage furious and told them they were banned from performing on the show ever again.
Van Morrison wrote it and also recorded it, although his recorded rendition is not popular except in certain "adult contemporary" and "blues" radio markets. Van Morrison with the Chieftains won the Grammy Award for this song in 1996 and his version was voted #6 of Top Ten First Dance wedding songs in the UK and also was voted as one of The 100 Greatest Love Songs in 2007 by NYDN. Rod Stewart's version is more popular primarily in the US pop music market. George Harrison also sang this song, just right after Van produced it.
