George Elton Mayo is considered the father of Human Resource management. Mayo conducted experiments to see how workers were affected by fatigue, work hours and breaks.
According to numerous interviews with Elton John and an unofficial biography his childhood is why he chose to dress as he did in the early to mid part of his career. His father was a very strict and not very involved with the Elton who was an only child. His father was in the British military and his mother a stay at home mother. The relationship between his parents was strained and eventually disbanded. Elton said he was extremely isolated, relegated to mostly to his bedroom listening to American music and developing his musical talents and tastes. What somewhat contradicts the account of his Father is his Father would allow and actually take Elton to Night Clubs at the age of 15-16 to play on weekends this to my knowledge has not been addressed by Elton or any other accounts. By dressing wild or weird he claims he was living out the childhood he never got to live because of his father and parents relationship. His Father did not offer much support of his interest in music despite Elton's obvious talents, he recommended a career in banking or accounting but Elton's school grades were never as keen as his musical talent however accounts from teachers paint a young man that never tried too hard either in school or the Royal Academy of Music to which he had won a scholarship. Seemingly Elton was impacted greatly because of his fear of his Father and became introverted as well as fighting his sexual identity although his Mother was much more supportive as was his step Father when she remarried. This may have been the first positive in his life but was without question the most defining time of his life. In summary Elton was severely isolated, prone to depression, had a strict parent whom he claims he feared. One has to wonder if his sexual identity was the more deep cause as being Gay in the time was something that was repressed by all of society and even quite possibly by the individual, not until he became popular and probably if not more so, wealthy, did Elton feel comfortable in his sexuality and life as his profession and status made his sexuality much less an issue.

Elton goes by Elton.
His parents were Stanley and Shiela Dwight- they did not get married until Elton was 6 years old. His father was a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, and both his parents were musically inclined, his father having played trumpet in the Bob Millar Band, a semi-professional dance band of the late '40s. Elton's father was strict with his son, and his parents never got on very well, often having terrible rows that he sometimes witnessed. They divorced when he was 14- his mother went on to marry a local painter called Fred Farebrother who was a kind and supportive stepfather to Elton.
