Milton Obote was succeeded by Idi Amin in January 1971 after a military coup. Amin, who was then the commander of the Uganda Army, overthrew Obote's government while he was attending a Commonwealth summit in Singapore. Amin's rule was marked by widespread human rights abuses and economic turmoil until he was eventually ousted in 1979.
Uganda has had many coups. The first was in 1966 overthrowing President Edward Muteesa II. The second in 1971 by Idi Amin against Milton Obote who had toppled Muteesa. In 1979, a coup removed Yusuf Lule. He was replaced by Godfrey Lukongwa Biaisa who in turn suffered a coup in 1980. The last coup was in 1985 against Milton Obote's second Governemnt.
