She dies in the Broadway version because she is shot by Diesel when leaving the candy store after telling the Jets Maria is dead. However in the movie version she lives. Having her live is more accurate to the original Romeo and Juliet, in which the nurse (the character Anita is based on) does not die. The reason they did not have Maria die, though, was because it seemed like too much death, so having Anita die doesn't make much sense with that, but maybe that's why she doesn't die in the movie. I'm in 8th grade and i took general music this semester and we watched west side story. my teacher explained to us that the play romeo and Juliet is similar to west side story because tony thinks maria is dead and he wants to die. Juliet thinks romeo is dead and she kills herself. then, maria sees tony dead, and tells them to kill her too, like romeo drinking poison when he sees Juliet. hope this answers your question! p.s. I'm not positive about who died first in romeo and Juliet, but i know that is how they are similar.
