hey there! I'm in 8th grade and i took general music this semester and we watched West Side Story. my teacher explained to us that the play Romeo and Juliet is similar to west side story because tony thinks maria is dead and he wants to die. Juliet thinks romeo is dead and she kills herself. then, maria sees tony dead, and tells them to kill her too, like romeo drinking poison when he sees Juliet. hope this answers your question!

p.s. I'm not positive about who died first in romeo and Juliet, but i know that is how they are similar.

What is the relationship between the dramas of ancient greek tragedy and the writings of William shakespeare or the musical drama west side story?

The history of theatre is not a series of independent outcroppings of theatrical artistry. All theatre built upon the theatre which went before. The ancient Greek theatre, which flourished about 300 BCE was the model for the later Roman plays of Plautus, Terence and Seneca. These Roman plays were studied in schools throughout Europe when the Renaissance brought a new interest in Roman literature, and this resulted in a revival of drama, which flourished in England at the time of Shakespeare (ca. 1600). Shakespeare really set the standard for English drama for many centuries, even though a number of different fashions in drama arose during that time. One such development was musical theatre, deriving from light opera and operetta both in England (Gilbert and Sullivan) and on the continent (Offenbach) and finally flowering as an American idiom with the seminal Broadway musical, Hammerstein and Kern's Show Boat in 1927. West Side Story, with music by American classical composer Leonard Bernstein, follows that tradition. The plot of West Side Story is based on the plot of one of William Shakespeare's plays, Romeo and Juliet. The story is not original to Shakespeare, however, and its origin lies in antiquity, possibly partly deriving from Ovid's story of Pyramus and Thisbe. There is no record of an ancient Greek tragedy on this theme.

Is there any relation between the dramas of ancient greek tragedy and the writings of William shakespeare or the musical drama west side story?

West Side Story is of course based loosely on the plot of William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It doesn't have anything to do with ancient Greek tragedy, but the story is similar to one told by the Latin writer Ovid about Pyramus and Thisbe.
