Anni-Frid's father was Alfred Haase, a German soldier who was romantically involved with Frida's mother, Synni Lyngstad, in occupied Norway in 1944. Synni believed he was lost at sea after the Nazis were driven out of Norway in 1945. But in 1977 his son read Frida's story in a German music magazine and confronted his father, who had no idea he had a daughter who was an international pop star. He flew to Stockholm to meet Frida two weeks later. They kept in touch for a few years but eventually drifted apart again. Apparently she was never convinced that he did not know her mother was pregnant when he left her behind in Norway.
After the war Synni was forced to send the infant Frida with her grandmother to Sweden to escape the persecution that was common in Norway against women who had had children with the Nazi occupiers. Synni died of kidney disease at the age of 21, when Frida was not yet 2.
Alfred Haase died in 2009 at the age of 89.
