Mary Elizabeth "Mimi" Stanley Smith was John Lennon's maternal aunt (older sister of his mother, Julia Stanley Lennon), who raised him from the age of five, though his mother remained close in his life. Mimi and husband George Smith, a dairy farmer, had no children. Mimi said she never wanted kids, but she wanted John.
His mother Julia was about to lose custody of John, because she was living with a man who wasn't her husband (to whom she was still married), had had another child by an acquaintance (whom she gave up for adoption), and had "no visible means of support" of her own. Mimi and her husband George had no children, and offered John a stabler home.
Not in any recorded songs. He noticed her in the audience during one of his first public performances, and another time in the Cavern Club, approaching the stage and scowling. (She was unhappy at his choice to become a musician.) Both times the song he was singing changed into "Uh oh, Mimi's coming... Mimi's coming up the path..."
Lennon may have alluded to Mimi in his song "Remember": "Do you remember your ma and pa / Just wishing for movie stardom / Always, always playing a part" and other lyrics. (She and her husband George were chiefly responsible for his upbringing.)
In Mark Shipper's parody Beatles biography Paperback Writer, Lennon collaborates with Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan on a never-completed song, "Pneumonia Ceilings", that included the line "Elevators don't tell time anymore / Since Mimi pushed them off the 17th floor". Though the story was fiction, "Pneumonia Ceilings" has nonetheless made it onto some lists of unrecorded Beatles songs.
