In 1964, ringo, the drummer, had throat surgery after he had to get his tonsils taken out, and as a result, he could not go on tour for a while. Jimmy Nicels took his place for the brief time he was gone. Almost immediately after his release from hospital, he announced his marriage to his long time girlfriend, Maureen.
