Johnny Cash's version of highwayman was just a cover of Jimmy Webb who originally wrote the song. Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson sang this cover. Hope that helps! -jortiz1854-
The song was written about Waylon Jennings. Jessie Colter (Waylon's wife), was talking to some friends of theirs (Waylon's and Jessie's) about the improper life style of Waylon and how he didn't take care of himself on the road. She said the members of his band didn't have the guts to tell him he wasn't taking care of himself, although they loved him very much. She was disappointed at them for not telling him that he needed to take better care of himself.

it is my understanding that the late Waylon Jennings wrote the theme to the dukes of hazard TV series entitled the good old boys. to my knowledge, it was the only theme song used in the series, which was performed by Waylon Jennings.
