It sounds kind of muffled and normally plays a similar part in a song as the bass instruments (tuba, trombone, etc.) An oboe is similar in physical attributes to an English horn. An oboe has 2 reeds and plays a similar part in songs that a flute does, just a bit lower-pitched.

Oboe or violin. Oboe is definitely the hardest wind instrument and violin is definitely the hardest string instrument. I had a violin teacher from Russia and she said "In America the hardest instrument to play is the oboe. But in Russia the violin is the hardest instrument to play." I lean towards violin not just because I play it but if you think about it all you have to do with the oboe is learn the fingerings and the breath....(which does take a long time to get right). In violin you have to learn a lot of different fingerings and and they do not have keys you have to learn how to put your fingers on in the correct place. Violin also just has a lot of music written for it. (more than oboe). But it is a still a matter of opinion. I've played the Oboe for a year, and now the bassoon-both double reed instruments. I actually think bassoon is much harder, although they're both double reeds, bassoon is a much bigger instrument, and requries a lot of patience, and a lot of musical ability. I don't know about the violin though!

How do you clean and maintain the bassoon?
The bassoon has a cleaning swab that you stick in through it's pipes. You do this with the "boot joint" and the "wing joint." The swab looks like a cloth with a string of silver metalic beads at the end. When cleaning your bassoon, you always stick the string in through the bigger end, and once it's in pretty far, you just tip it a little and you pull. The swab rarely gets stuck in the bassoon, but if it does, you may need a proffessional to get it out. Also, before you put your bassoon away, be sure to blow air through the wrong end of the reed as well as your bocal before closing your bassoon case and putting your bassoon away. Sometimes though, if your bassoon gets dusty, you may need to use this little toothbrush thing to get rid of the dust.
