Actually many rivers run north in North America. Water has no sense of direction. If flows downhill by gravity. Most rivers east of the Rocky Mountains do flow in a southerly direction because the elevation is lower to the south and they are flowing toward the Gulf of Mexico.

All rivers DON'T flow in the same direction, in the sense of North or West, but they do all flow down hill because that is the way gravity and water interact.

Can you install a diode to allow 24 volts AC to flow in one direction but not allow the flow of 24 volts AC to flow in the opposite direction?

Diodes convert AC into DC by allowing current flow in one direction only. Since AC is alternating between plus and minus it is not possible to use a diode to allow AC to flow in one direction and not in the other direction.

What allows current to flow in one direction?

A diode is one of the fundamental building blocks of electronics. They allow the flow of electrons in one direction only. Thus are commonly used as rectifiers to turn ac voltages into dc. [A dry cell (mistakenly called a battery, which is a group of cells) will allow electron flow in one direction only, or rather, it will provide current flow in one direction. ]

Why diode is called mechanical valve?

A valve allows flow in only one direction. Diodes allow electrical current to flow in one direction only.
