Gustav Holst was taught to play the violin and piano. But, he was a frail child. His father encouraged him to learn to play the Trombone, believing it would improve his son's Asthma.

Eventually, he gave up the piano due to a nerve condition in his right hand. From that point, he concentrated on the trombone and, of course, composing.
