Michael Jackson's skin was white because he had a rare skin condition called vitiligo.

Vitiligo is an inherited genetic disorder, it is a condition in which you lose melanocytes (cells that give color to the skin). This results in smooth, white-milky patches in the midst of normally pigmented skin. In the case of African-Americans, this discoloration is very prominent, although any age, sex and race can suffer from it.

He has a skin disease called Vitiligo. Vitiligo is a chronic rare dermatologic disorder that causes depigmentation in patches of skin. It occurs when the melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation, die or become unable to function.

Michael was diagnosed in 1986 with vitiligo and lupus; the latter is potentially lethal but is in remission in Jackson's case. In a 90-minute interview with Oprah Winfrey in February 1993, Jackson dismissed suggestions that he bleached his skin, admitting for the first time that he had the illness.

There were rumors for years that Michael Jackson had chemically lightened his skin so that he could look more white. But he always denied it, and instead, attributed the phenomenon to something beyond his control-- a skin disease called vitiligo, which causes the skin to lose its pigmentation, such that it becomes progressively lighter.
