Rancid's singer (I think its Tim Armstrong) was in Operation Ivy. In Rancid's song "Journey to the East Bay" the lyrics state: "Started in 87, ended in 89 got a garage or an amp well play any time. It was the four of us, just the core of us, too much attention unavoidably destroyed us." So I guess the attention brought them down. Operation Ivy became somewhat "known" after their album Energy was released on the indie label Lookout Records and it sold relatively well for an indie punk record at the time. The band become more "known" (I still wouldn't say famous) after the band Green Day hit the big time in 1994. Green Day covered the Op Ivy's song "Knowledge" on their first album, and often mentioned them as an influence in interviews. Green Day's first two albums were also released on Lookout Records. The band gained increasing popularity again after the band Rancid scored a hit the following year. Rancid's lead singer, Tim Armstrong (Lint) was a member of Operation Ivy.
