Sir Francis Drake was an English pirate, famous for sinking Spanish ships. His greatest claim to fame was leading several attacks against the Spanish and, as vice-admiral in command of the English fleet, he was instrumental in defeating the Spanish Armada as it attempted to invade England. He was a skilled seaman, and this skill was put to use later.

Drake's other major accomplishment was that he was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world. On this voyage, undertaken between 1577 and 1580, he discovered that Tierra del Fuego, to the south of the Straits of Magellan, was not part of a southern continent (then thought of as Terra Australis, but not to be confused with the later Terra Australis which became Australia). The belief that the lands were connected had limited sea exploration, but Drake's discovery that Tierra was an archipelago later led to the realisation that ships would be able to sail around the bottom of South America, south of Tierra. This became the Cape Horn route which was ultimately discovered in 1616, though not by Drake.

During this voyage, Drake also discovered that Java was not part of the southern continent that it was previously thought to be, but an island.

He also took tobacco and potatoes back home with him.
