Pirates, and all sailors on sailships of the 18th century, sang sea chanteys, which were mostly work songs. The rhythm of the music was used to coordinate combined efforts, such as when a bunch of men had to pull on a rope at the same time. There were short-haul songs, for brief tasks, long-haul songs for longer-lasting tasks, capstan shanties for marching around and pushing the capstan (such as to raise the anchor), and forecastle songs, which were just recreational songs. Some songs were only sung on the return voyage, which usually have lyrics about going home. A well-known example of a sea chantey style song, although it is modern, is the theme song to SpongeBob SquarePants, which follows the format of a short-haul song.

They were songs sung by sailors. Back in the day of sailing ships they had no engines to do such heavy work as raising the anchor or trimming the sails. That kind of work had to be done by gangs of men all working together. To help them work together they sang rhythmic songs, which were the origin of shanties.
