There was the biggest outdoor rock fest ever, on August 15-18, 1969.
Thousands of people came to Woodstock (actually held near Bethel in upstate New York) to listen to the likes of Janice Joplin, Jimmi Hendrix and many others for 3 days of musical performances. This was a major display of the 1960s counter-culture (hippies) and anti-war movements. There was considerable use of illicit drugs.
Conditions were sunny and hot, but there was also rain that turned some of the concert grounds into massive mud pits.

No, the Grateful Dead did not perform at Woodstock in 1969. They were scheduled to play but arrived late due to traffic and missed their set time. Instead, the band played at the Woodstock festival's sister event, the Woodstock 2 festival, in 1970.
Woodstock tickets cost six dollars a day. So it cost a total of eighteen dollars to attend the three day event.
In spite of negative news reports in the beginning, Woodstock was a success, Michael Lang did what he set out to do, put on an outdoor concert event. Considering the amount of people gathered in one place the event was historic, there was no violence and many people donated food. The organizers did not make any money, and were sued by numerous vendors and nearby farmers, so in that respect it could be seen as a disaster, but the performers, attendees and organizers don't view it as such.
